FAULTY FORELAND: BLACK SHALE DEPOSITION

AND FAULT BEND FOLD DEVELOPMENT

(APPALACHIAN BASIN, OF COURSE)

This talk will be presented in person by

Dr. Robert Jacobi,

Professor Emeritus,

University at Buffalo

Overview: Bob will show data that suggest faults formed tectonic dams that impeded the basinward spread of the Devonian black shales in the Appalachian Basin in NYS. These faults include 1) faults reactivating in response to plate down-warping in response to thrust and sediment loading to the east and to the southeast in different times, and 2) incipient salt-cored folds resulting from salt mobility. He will also review seismic sections that reveal the nature of fault bend folds in the PA and WV portion of the Appalachian Basin.

About our speaker

Professor Emeritus Robert Jacobi, P.G. (PhD, 1980, Columbia University) taught at the University at Buffalo from 1980 to 2016. He has also consulted for many industrial concerns and environmental groups for over 40 years.  Dr. Jacobi’s present research and expertise integrates structure, sedimentology, stratigraphy, seismic, remote sensing, aeromag and gravity in order to understand the inter-relationships among those elements and tectonics, faults, joints, and their effects, such as seismicity, hydrocarbon resources, contaminant transport, and CO2 sequestration in the northern Appalachian Basin. He has co/authored over 350 journal articles, book chapters, abstracts, and co-edited two books, all on the Appalachian Orogen, the Appalachian Basin and marine geology.

Dr. Jacobi is past-President of the Eastern Section AAPG, Northeastern Section GSA, Eastern Section SEPM, and NYSGA. He was the General Co-Chair & Symposia Director for the 1996 GSA Northeast Section Annual Meeting at Buffalo, NY, and was General Chair for the 2006 Eastern Section AAPG Annual Meeting and the 2006 NYSGA Annual Meeting. He was a member of the “National Site Assessment Committee” (for the sub-seabed disposal of high-level nuclear waste), and a member of the “Review Panel for Seismic Hazard Assessment for the Atomic Energy Control Board” (Canada).

Among other honors he was awarded the Galey Award, the highest honor of the Eastern Section AAPG; other AAPG honors include the “Distinguished Service Award”, several “Certificates of Merit”, and the “Outstanding Educator Award”, for which the citation reads: “To an educator whose contribution transcends the classroom. He brings the world to his students and prepares them as a gift to the world”. He is a fellow of Geological Society of America.
