Geophysics and its Role in Appalachian Basin Oil and Gas Exploration and Development

Joel Star
EQT Production

Abstract: The Appalachian Basin, as an oil and gas province, runs from southern New York State to Tennessee. Since the 1970s, geophysics has played an important role in allowing for enhanced exploitation of the oil and gas resources in this region. Initial efforts were limited to mostly gravity and 2D seismic but recently, with focus on the shales, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, 3D seismic along with micro-seismic and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) are playing an increasingly important role in improving hydrocarbon extraction. This presentation reviews the relationship of geophysics to the boom and bust cycle of hydrocarbon development in the Appalachian Basin over the last 47 years.

Biography: Joel Starr is the Principal Geophysicist for EQT Production in Pittsburgh PA. He received a B.S. in Geology from Juniata College in 1985 and an M.S. in Geophysics from the University of New Orleans in 1990. He has worked in the Gulf of Mexico, South America, North Sea and Arabian Gulf. He spent too much time in West Africa and not enough time in Australia. Joel contributed to the development of the Ocean Bottom Seismic acquisition technique in the early 1990’s as well as several methods for processing multi-component data. He holds five patents and multiple publications in the SEG and EAGE.
