Surface Microseismic:
How Many Events Are Enough?

Abstract: In this presentation, we investigate the different types of information that geoscientists wish to extract from their microseismic data, and attempt to answer the question that is the subtitle of the talk. The presentation will be illustrated by data from a large-scale, successful microseismic survey conducted recently by Dawson Geophysical and NanoSeis in the Midland County area of the Permian Basin, but with results and conclusions that apply to many unconventional plays for which we have processed microseismic data, in the United States and around the world. The survey was designed and specified to use a very high level of field effort in order to allow decimation studies on the data, and to allow us to approximate the minimum field effort that would be required to effectively characterize the hydraulic fracture for the operator’s formations of interest.
The operator of the wells that were monitored also collected downhole microseismic data on this project, which allowed them to perform comparisons between the surface and downhole methodologies.
Barry sits on the Industrial Advisory Board of the Department of Computer Science at Colorado State University, and maintains an interest in optimization in large problem spaces, deconvolution, and artificial intelligence.
Biography: Barry Fish is the Chief Operating Officer at NanoSeis, and has extensive experience in the energy and software industries. He began his geophysics career at Union Pacific Resources in Canada, and subsequently worked with the other two NanoSeis principals, Dave Diller and Ted Shuck, at Advance Geophysical on ProMAX and SeisSpace.
Barry escaped from the oil industry for about a decade, and worked on software and operations projects for Sun Microsystems and EDS. Two notable ones were managing the patch- and update-delivery team for Sun, and a multi-site network refresh for an EDS customer.
