Appalachian 3D seismic acquisition- case studies

by Jianli Yang

Seneca Resources

Since 2009 Seneca Resources has participated in the acquisition of 12 proprietary 3D seismic surveys covering over 650 sq. mi. in northern Pennsylvania.  These data have been an integral part of Seneca’s success developing unconventional reserves in the Appalachian Basin.  Overall data quality has been excellent in spite of the numerous data acquisition challenges this area presents.

Although each survey provides its own unique set of challenges a successful 3D program usually involves considerable planning including the following steps:  1. Execution of an effective bid process to obtain the most competitive acquisition proposal; 2. HSE integration in all aspects of the program; 3. Initiation of permitting well in advance of survey acquisition; 4. Communication with local authorities/residents; 5. Implementation of an effective survey design which eliminates surface footprints and maximizes azimuthal coverage; and 6. Selection of an effective processing company and closely monitoring the processing sequence and products.

About our Speaker

Jianli Yang is a Geophysical Advisor with Seneca Resources where she has worked the Appalachian Basin since 2010.   Jianli previously worked the Canadian Foothills for Talisman in Calgary.  She earned an MS in Exploration Geophysics from the University of Calgary and an MS in Petrophysics from the China University of Petroleum.  Jianli’s primary focus has been the acquisition, processing and interpretation of 3D seismic data as it relates to the development of unconventional shale resource plays including the Marcellus, Geneseo and Utica.  Jianli is a member of SEG and AAPG and was past vice president of GSP
